March 18, 2008

 Dear Parents:

Bible

For Bible, students will be working on 1 Corinthians 13:1-5.  See Bible worksheet for instructions.  Be sure to discuss the questions with your students to draw out the meanings and help them better understand what God is teaching us.

Be sure everyone is reviewing Eph. 6:10-17 at least one or two times per week.

Language Arts

We begin learning new Greek and Latin words this week .  Be sure your students have the words, derivations, definitions on 3x5 cards and are studying them.

This week, we will be studying lesson 12 in Poetry. We will take the entire week to study this lesson as we are getting into a bit more complex study of poetry and I want to be sure everyone is understanding the lesson fully.  Students are going to be studying "personfication."

History

No history work this week.

Science

I will be teaching science this week.  Please see homework sheet below for questions on content.

Blessings in Christ,

Dianne Jackel

Unit Study

Homework for Week of 4/1

NOTE:  I would like all work done at home to be signed by the parent before the student returns the work for me to grade and correct.  Work completed in class should be signed by Mrs. Hewavita or Mrs. Jackel.  This will include Bible and Language Arts journals, worksheets, etc.  A simple signature or initial on the page in the lower right-hand corner will be sufficient.  This will ensure that the work is turned in completed on a consistent basis.  Thank you!

Bible

1)  Continue to go through Ephesians 6:10 – 17 (below) (for review purposes; we will be reciting these verses at the end of the year )

REVIEW:  Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.  For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.  Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.  Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

NEW: 1 Corinthians 13.  We will spend the rest of the semester working on this chapter, so please be sure your student is practicing at home.

13:1-5 – “If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophesy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.  And if I give all of my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me nothing. Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered.”

Verse test on 4/8.

4)  Practice a few sword drills!

5)      Students have in-class Bible (from Matthew 26-28) questions to answer this week.  Students not completing questions in class will finish at home.

Language Arts – Upper Grammar – 4th-5th – 6th Grade

1)      Practice new Latin words and study from cards.

            3)  Practice spelling words. One passing test per week is required.

3)  Complete any work at home that you were unable to complete in class.

All 4th – 5th – 6th graders will be completing all homework assignments in cursive.  This week’s poetry assignment is to complete and KNOW Lesson 11.  You will be tested on the content of Lesson 11 on April 8.

History – Lower Grammar and Upper Grammar

None this week

Science – Lower Grammar and Upper Grammar

Memorize the four layers of the atmosphere:  troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere.  We will study in class, but I would like the students to learn the terms.

The layer closest to the earth is called the troposphere.  Almost all weather happens in this layer.  This is the air we breath.  In the troposphere, air temperature decreases as you go higher.

Stratosphere contains most of the atmosphere’s ozone, which is a kind of oxygen.  Some airplanes fly in the stratosphere.  Ozone protects living things from the sun’s harmful rays.  Temperatures in the stratosphere increase with height.

The mesosphere air temperature decreases with height.  In fact, the mesosphere is the coldest layer of the atmosphere.

The thermosphere temperature increases quickly with height.  Temperatures high in the thermosphere can reach thousands of degrees Celsius.

P.S.: The layer of air that surrounds our planet is called the atmosphere.

We will begin our lesson on Thursday in class, so please do not introduce this subject until Friday and Monday.

Bible – 1 Corinthians 13:9-13

Upper & Lower Grammar

Tuesday, 4/1

In class, we will discuss 1 Corinthians 13:9-12

All students:  We will do a class project that will demonstrate what it means to only see or understand something dimly.  How have we grown in our understanding since we were very small children?  Do we remember things that we couldn’t understand but now we are able to because we are older and more experienced?

Wednesday, 3/12

All students:  In your Bible journals, answer the following questions:

1)      Explain your understanding of verse 9: “For we know in part and we prophesy in part;”  If you are at home, discuss this verse with your parent(s).

2)      Knowing that no one will ever understanding perfectly in this world, what can we do to understand more than we already do?  What will you personally do to understand more (think about the main way God communicates with each of us)?

Thursday, 3/13

In class, we will discuss 1 Corinthians 13:13 and what it means that love is the greatest of these.

Upper Grammar students: Using scripture from 1Cor 13, answer each question to show how you will handle the problems listed below.  Use a different scripture for each question and also add your own thoughts to each answer.  Be honest.  We all know that we will stumble and fall and that we will often need God’s “spankings,” but state how will use God’s word to help you when the trials come.  Take your time on each question and give thoughtful answers.  You have through Monday to complete these.

1)      Look up the word “abide” in a dictionary.  Write what abide means in your Bible journal.

2)      Now that you know what it means to abide, how will you abide in faith, hope and love when/if you are made fun of by friends or neighbors because you’re a Christian?

3)      How will you keep your faith when doubts come in your mind from various places?

4)      How will you keep your hope up when someone you love greatly, but is not a Christian, dies?

5)      How will you minister to others who are spiritually lost and they are unkind to you, make fun of you and even would want to persecute you?

6)      How should you react toward the Muslims (many of them who are “radical”) who are killing Christians and desiring to see the world taken over for “Allah.”

7)      How do you react to your own family members when they act unkindly to you or do not give you something you think you deserve?
